JoAnn’s Legacy Youth Scholarship

At Black Horse Ranch, everything we do is rooted in one simple belief: you’re family here.

The JoAnn’s Legacy Youth Scholarship was created to honor the life and heart of our founder, JoAnn Cosgrove—whose greatest joy was welcoming others, sharing her love of horses, and helping people feel like they belonged.

This scholarship continues her legacy by opening doors for young riders who are passionate about horses but may need support to pursue their dreams.

What This Scholarship Provides

The JoAnn’s Legacy Youth Scholarship offers financial assistance for horse shows, training, and equestrian development. Youth explain in the application what they need, or what is holding them back from moving forward with their equestrian goals. Examples of support might be purchasing a piece of tack or equipment, an outfit, hat or boots, something needed to move them forward in their competitive or training goals. It could also apply to clinic funds, or a specific training that leads to a goal crush, or entry fees for a competition or club.

Whether a rider is just beginning their journey or working toward competitive goals, this program is designed to support growth, confidence, and opportunity in the equestrian world.

This is more than financial help—it’s an investment in the next generation of riders.

Who It’s For

  • Youth riders ages 8–16

  • Dedicated, passionate individuals who love horses

  • Riders who demonstrate commitment, character, and a willingness to learn

  • Those who would benefit from additional support to continue advancing in the sport

How It Works

Riders are nominated for the scholarship by a trainer, instructor, mentor, or community member who can speak to their character, dedication, and passion for horses.

Each nomination must include a letter of recommendation supporting the rider and sharing why they would be a strong candidate for this opportunity.

Selection & Award Process

All nominations and applications are reviewed by the JoAnn’s Legacy Scholarship Board.

The board thoughtfully evaluates each nominee based on:

  • Demonstrated passion and commitment to riding

  • Character, sportsmanship, and work ethic

  • Financial need

  • Overall alignment with the values and spirit of Black Horse Ranch

Scholarship recipients are selected based on both merit and need, as well as available funding at the time of review.

Because this program is supported through community contributions, the number and size of scholarships may vary.

Why It Matters

Horses have a way of shaping confidence, responsibility, and resilience—but access to opportunities in the equestrian world isn’t always easy.

JoAnn believed deeply in giving people a chance.

This scholarship exists to:

  • Break down financial barriers

  • Create access to meaningful experiences

  • Support young riders in building lifelong skills

  • Keep the spirit of generosity and community alive at Black Horse Ranch

In Memory of JoAnn Cosgrove

JoAnn didn’t just build a ranch—she built a place where people felt seen, supported, and inspired.

Her legacy lives on in every rider we help, every dream we support, and every moment shared at Black Horse Ranch.
